Curriculum Development Grant
2023 Call for Proposals

Application Deadline: Saturday, April 15th, 2023
PURPOSE

The Center for Islam in the Contemporary World (CICW) Curriculum Development Grant Program supports Shenandoah University faculty who want to develop content or pedagogical practices that integrate teaching on Islam, Muslims, and Muslim culture and/or practices into their courses and syllabi. Grants may be used to develop content for a new course or expand/modify an existing course in a relevant subject area. Interdisciplinary approaches and perspectives are highly encouraged. The maximum grant award is $2,500 (two thousand and five hundred US dollars). The CICW will make two grant awards in this cycle. Awardees will be expected to work on their curriculum development projects during Summer or Fall of 2023, and complete all post-award reporting requirements by December 31, 2023. Faculty must commit to using the grant-supported curriculum in their taught courses in the 2023/24 and/or 2024/24 academic years.

ELIGIBILITY AND FUNDS DISBURSEMENT

Faculty who are in a continuing position are eligible to apply. Adjunct and visiting faculty may also apply [they will be given secondary consideration for grants]. Faculty must be committed to teaching for at least an entire academic year--wherein they should apply developed curricula--following the grant period. [Grants will not be awarded to faculty who intend to use the grant during a sabbatical or an untenured faculty leave.]

Funds are generally available for course materials, consultant support, travel, equipment, audio-visual materials, or other approved tasks. Funds are disbursed as a reimbursement. Faculty stipend is paid after the final report and syllabus are submitted.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

The CICW Grants Committee will evaluate proposals with the following considerations:

  1. Proposals should relate to advancing an understanding of Islam and Muslims in the contemporary world, in line with the purpose of the CICW Curriculum Grant. They may also include historical topics related to Islam and Muslim communities. Please consult the CICW website (www.contemporaryislam.org) to learn more about CICW's mission and vision.
  2. Proposed course summaries must be eligible for approval within Shenandoah University’s course development framework. Proposed courses should be innovative and unique. Proposals may seek to introduce a new course to the University or expand/improve an existing one.
  3. Proposals should be supported by a detailed development plan and budget that can be executed within the time constraints of the grant period.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Submission deadline: April 15, 2023

  1. Cover Sheet for CICW Curriculum Development Grant [(i.e., Personal info, the course title, one sentence project description, any other funding available for the proposal, requested amount)] – 1 page
  2. Proposal [(Sections: Course description, rationale/significance, development plan, budget & budget justification, timeline for implementation)] – 2-3 pages
  3. Current Academic CV [max. Three pages]
  4. A sample syllabus – only for existing courses (with a clear indication within the proposal section of this application on how the grant-supported materials or contents would fit within the syllabus)

REPORTING REQUIREMENTS

Awardees are required to submit a two-page report, together with the syllabus, by December 31, 2023. The report will summarize the work done and how the new or amended syllabus incorporates material related to Islam and Muslim cultures. It should indicate changes and improvements made in an amended syllabus.

All application materials should be submitted by email in a single PDF file to Marjan Popal at mpopal@contemporaryislam.org
